Installing the solar power system in Bimbilla required a budget of $36,000. While the project is well underway, it is only about 80% funded. We are still looking for donors to help us complete it.

The power supply in Bimbilla, Ghana, had been unstable for some time. The mains voltage was so low that even expensive voltage stabilisers could no longer remedy the situation. The lights were dim and the water pump had stopped working. To fill the water tank, the generator had to run for hours, consuming a lot of gasoline and generating considerable noise.

But that’s a thing of the past for the GfC mission in Bimbilla! Thanks to a new solar power system with a large battery, clean, stable energy is now available 24/7. Lighting, water and air conditioning can now be operated reliably. Installing the solar system cost $36,000. To ensure the system’s long-term sustainability and maintenance, we continue to rely on your support.

The new solar power system has been operational since Sunday 9 February. The numerous voltage stabilisers and frequent generator starts are now a thing of the past. There is finally enough electricity for lights, fans and electrical appliances. In particular, the fans were barely usable before — they ran so slowly that there was hardly any air circulation. With outdoor temperatures exceeding 40 degrees and indoor temperatures well over 30 degrees, sleeping became challenging. Now, the fans are providing a pleasant breeze once again. Another major advantage is that the sun doesn’t send a bill and isn’t subject to inflation. This is especially valuable in sunny Africa, where people are no longer dependent on an unstable power grid.

Gunda and Roland are a dedicated Swiss couple who work at the GfC Mission  in Bimbilla. They have had a lasting impact on the lives of many people in the region through their work.

Gunda is a trained nurse who speaks Fulibi, the language of a local, largely nomadic tribe. These language skills enable her to build close ties with the local people and provide them with targeted assistance. As well as providing medical care, Gunda helps to teach the children, who have limited access to education for various reasons.

Roland is the mission’s handyman. Thanks to his versatility and technical skills, he can repair, upgrade and install almost anything by himself. When he encounters challenges, he seeks out the necessary knowledge or assistance to solve them. Thanks to his efforts, the mission’s infrastructure is always in top condition, ensuring the solar system operates efficiently.

Thanks to Gunda and Roland’s tireless efforts, the GfC mission in Bimbilla has significantly improved the quality of life in the region. Their work exemplifies the importance and effectiveness of personal connections and local engagement.
