In August 2017, a 4.5 kW PV system was installed at Radio Radford FM, a local radio station in Tumu. The system will produce approximately 5,300 kWh per year and is intended to help the station reduce its energy costs and serve as a model for sustainable energy in the region. The solar panels for the system were deliberately sourced from a Ghanaian company to support local manufacturing. Initially, self-sufficiency has been increased to over 50%, providing significant relief to the radio station.

A Vital Role for the Community

Radio Radford plays a vital role in the local community. The region has no printed newspaper and around three-quarters of the adult population is illiterate. As a result, radio is particularly important for informing, entertaining and educating people, especially on political issues such as elections and voting. As a public service radio station, it is committed to reaching the people in their local language.

Energy Crisis and the Need for a Solar Solution

Prior to the installation of the solar system, Radio Radford regularly faced high electricity bills that often went unpaid. This prompted Radio Radford to seek help from FTE. They had seen the PV system on the roof of SILAP Guesthouse and were impressed. The entire system was funded 50% by Fair Trade Energy (FTE) and 50% by REPIC. To ensure Radio Radford’s involvement in the development of the project, FairTrade Energy (FTE) provided a small loan of 5,000 GHS, which was invested directly into the solar system. This was important to increase the value of the system to Radio Radford, as financial participation often brings a greater sense of responsibility and appreciation. To refinance the loan, FTE received airtime that could be resold, as well as green certificates, which are issued for every kWh produced when someone makes a donation. Monitoring tools ensure that no kWh is sold twice.

Expansion, Maintenance, and Success Story

The PV system has been instrumental in helping Radio Radford reduce running costs and continue to inform the local community. Despite some post-installation challenges, the project is considered a success. Recently, a battery was added to the system to maximise self-sufficiency and better bridge power outages. In addition, two energy efficient air conditioners and an automatic switch between off-grid and grid operation have been installed, contributing to the system being almost 100% self-sufficient.

Maintenance of the system is an important factor that still requires donations. This includes cleaning and technical support. Further upgrades are also being considered to increase the capacity of the system, making Radio Radford increasingly self-sufficient.
